Spotify readies iPhone app for its streaming music service

On-demand music streaming company Spotify is readying an iPhone client for its service, and expects to release it in a matter of weeks.
The iPhone software should be available as a free download from the App Store in a few weeks’ time, but using it to stream music will require a Spotify Premium subscription, the company’s communications manager Jim Butcher said Monday.

New Report Suggests Facebook Has Replaced Email For Sharing Content

According to the people at addtoany, the volume of information being shared around the web through Facebook has increased dramatically over the past year. Specifically, Facebook now accounts for 24 percent of all items being shared in contrast to email which now accounts for 11.1 percent. Not surprisingly, Twitter now accounts for 10.8 percent of all items shared. I reached out to the company to find out what sampling size the company has.

While Pat Diven of AddToAny couldn’t provide specific details, he said that their widget is accessed over 1.5 billion times per month. The other two leaders AddThis and Share This also have a large number of implementations around the web, providing for a significant sample size. Justin Thorp of AddThis, which is 20 times larger than AddToAny, told us that Facebook is also the largest sharing site through their platform, accounting for 23.5 percent of shares, almost identical to AddToAny’s statistics.

What’s clear is that Facebook continues to single handedly eat away from email as one of the primary communication channels. The platform is also now the largest for sharing information although Twitter appears to be taking a large volume away as they have a large percentage of the market of users who actively share. The next step for Facebook is to become one of the primary communication channels by improving their inbox.

The company has steadily improved the inbox product, however it is still significantly lacking. There’s no way to export messages and there is no email support. It’s also not easy to sort through a large number of messages. Regardless of all the downfalls, Facebook has become the most dominant sharing platform online and continues to grow daily. If Facebook can keep this up, the number of links passing through the site could potentially rival the number of links being crawled by Google.

Do you use Facebook as your primary sharing channel?

Its fascinating how Facebook just keeps taking a greater share of pretty much any communication channel you care to mention. Its even better at sharing links than the sites that are specifically set up for that purpose (Digg, Deicious etc)

Another music service

I posted yesterday about Spotify, but there is several other free music services available, so i thought id let you know about another one called Grooveshark.

The key differences between Spotify and Grooveshark is that Grooveshark needs nothing installed... it all works straight out the browser and Grooveshark has no advertisements.
This means you can run it on any PC, so in some ways is more flexible than Spotify, but the quality of the music on there can be a problem sometimes.... it appears that some of the music is copied from radio stations etc. as you occasionally will hear a DJ introduce a track. It can also take a while before a track starts to play.
Grooveshark also has a feature called Autoplay, that will play tracks automatically based on what it thinks you may be interested in.

If I had to choose, I would pick Spotify because the music is always spot on, and plays with such little latency, it feels like the music is on your PC rather than streaming over the web.

But as its free... who am I to criticise?

Great application for listening to music on your PC or MAC

If you know me, you will know that I'm a big fan of listening to music while I work. I often plug my headphones into my iPhone and listen to that, but recently I have been using an on-line music service called Spotify (www.spotify.com). The great thing about Spotify is that its free (but you have to put up with a 30 second advert every 30 minutes or so. If you want to get rid of the adverts, it costs 99p for a day pass, or £9.99 for a month.

The music catalogue is huge (and growing by about 8000 tunes per day... so if you like music (and specifically if you want to listen to an album before you decide to buy it, Spotify is perfect
